Rocky, the Gentle Giant German Shepherd

Life sure takes its twists and turns. Justin and I find ourselves unable to give continued, loving, fun care to our sweet Rocky. We are looking for a perfect new home for him. Maybe it's yours?

Rocky, the gentle giant German Shepherd (about 28" at the shoulder, 100 lbs), is 2 years old, so he's through the difficult "puppy" and "teenage" stuff, although he's always been so good there wasn't much of that "stuff" at all! He lives to be a "good boy" and knows that if you say "uh uh" he'd better snap into line!

He's an unusually good boy, wanting only to please. He's got a VERY strong play drive and a VERY strong prey drive, which makes him not only fun to play with, but he'd also be a superb Search & Rescue, Drug Enforcement or K-9 dog.

I've had several German Shepherds in my life, and Rocky, by far, is the smartest. In 1999 I gave up a gorgeous Shepherd named Jackson to the Adirondack Search & Rescue Team in NY. They told me they reveiw many dogs before they choose one, and they took my Jackie the night they saw him. He went on to find lost hikers, disoriented senior citizens, and lost children in the Adirondacks. His team also helped out at 9-11 Ground Zero.

Rocky is much more focused on the "find it" game. He'll ferret out a tiny stick, hardly touched for a second by us, when its thrown deep into the underbrush on a hillside. At night. If we continue saying "Find it!", he'll just keep looking until it's retreived. If we have a better stickie, and we say, "Fugget-about-it" he will and come to play with the new stick, or ball, or stuffed animal, or 3 gallon crushed water container with a rope tied on to it (his favorite) and a pebble inside for noise when he does"shakey shakey".

But here's the best part - he learns fast. Real fast. Name something once for him, and he knows it, and can choose it, when told, over several other hot toys of the minute! He learns locations (kitchen, greenhouse, cottage, porch, chair, etc.) with one try, and also learns tricks immediately.

He loves people and is friendly, however he looks frighteningly ferocious when running towards visitors, which is exactly what you want. We are sure that if an intruder were to approach, Rocky would sense the danger and react appropriately. We're thankful we've never had to test him on this, although there was one night when he wasn't even a year old, and a truck got stuck in the mud in our lower field. He was barking and very agitated. He stayed with us when we went out to have a look, and once we determined everything was ok, and we told him, he settled down, although he insisted on sleeping on the front porch, in front of our door. What a great guard dog!

Rocky is not a barker, which is also good. He'll bark when someone approaches, or if there's a stray animal around. Our neighbor's miniature horse and donkey once wandered over! He's not very verbal, but he makes up for it with his facial expressions. His eyes, ears and body posture tell it all. He'll throw a stick down, or even a tiny piece of hay if no stick is available, look up at you, back up a bit, look up at you, look down at the stick, look up at you, and if you're not paying attention, he'll pick it up again and throw it over to you closer and start all over again looking and posturing. He's lots of fun.

Rocky has mostly been an outdoor dog, here on our 166 acre farm, but he was "trained" as a baby inside and learned within a couple of weeks to do his "business" outside. He'd make a great indoor pet, as he's careful about things when he does come inside.

He's been fed top quality dog food, both wet and dry, plus some concoctions I mix up for him, and he gets a raw egg from our Organic Free Range chickens in his dinner every other day. Most days I additionally supplement his wet and dry food with diced vegetables, or fruit, sunflower seeds, organic whole grains (cooked), and once in a while he gets some raw chicken (ours of course).

By the way, he's learned to leave the kitty, chickens and bunnies alone, and he's also learned that it's ok for them to be wherever they want to be - he used to be upset and bark when they were too far from their roost! He is very well trained with "Leave it!" when the bunnies go hopping by and the urge to play and chase takes over. He'll stop and even come back with the command "Leave it!"

Rocky comes from good stock, and we have his papers and "German" geneology. He had some professional training with basic commands, and he's very obedient. And he sure knows how to put on the "cute" irresistable look!

Oh, it's not easy to even think about giving him up, but Justin and I have decided looking for a new mama and papa is what's needed. Maybe even some brothers and sisters? He's gentle and calm around children. He's such a great dog.
